Chapter 1: The Vanishing Spectacles Harold Pemberton III was not a man given to panic. He had survived the Great Toilet Paper Shortage of 2020, the time his mother-in-law moved in for "just a weekend" that lasted six months, and even that unfortunate incident at the zoo involving a particularly amorous peacock. But on this fateful Tuesday morning, as he patted down his bathrobe pockets for the seventeenth time, Harold felt the cold fingers of true terror creeping up his spine. "Martha!" he bellowed, his voice cracking like a pubescent teenager's. "MARTHA! CODE RED! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!" His wife appeared in the doorway, wielding a spatula like a weapon, her face covered in what appeared to be either a green beauty mask or the remnants of last night's guacamole experiment. It was hard to tell without his glasses. "What now, Harold? Did you accidentally subscribe to another streaming service?" "Worse!" Harold dropped to his knees, running his hands along the carpet like a demented archaeologist. "My glasses! They've vanished! Disappeared! Vaporized into the ether!" Martha sighed, a sound that contained within it twenty-three years of marriage, two mortgages, and approximately 8,000 similar crises. "Did you check your nightstand?" "Of course I checked the nightstand! What kind of amateur do you take me for?" Harold's hands swept under the bed, collecting dust bunnies that, without his glasses, looked suspiciously like small, gray puppies. "I've checked everywhere! The bathroom, the kitchen, the refrigerator—" "The refrigerator?" "Don't judge me, Martha! Desperate times call for desperate measures!" He stood up, swaying slightly. Without his glasses, the world was a blur of shapes and colors, like living inside an impressionist painting painted by someone with severe hiccups. Martha set down her spatula and approached her husband with the cautious movements of someone approaching a spooked horse or a Black Friday shopper who'd spotted the last discounted television. "Okay, let's think about this logically. When did you last have them?" "Last night! I was reading that book about the history of doorknobs—fascinating stuff, by the way, did you know that the ancient Egyptians—" "Focus, Harold." "Right. I was reading, then I got up to get a glass of water, then I came back to bed, and then..." His face went pale, or at least Martha assumed it did. Without his glasses, Harold's face looked like a flesh-colored blob with what might have been a mustache or possibly a small ferret resting on his upper lip. "And then?" "And then I woke up this morning, and they were gone! It's like they just walked away on their little glasses legs!" Martha pinched the bridge of her nose, inadvertently smearing guacamole-beauty-mask across her face. "Glasses don't have legs, Harold." "That's what they want you to think!" Harold's eyes went wide, though the effect was somewhat diminished by the fact that he was staring at a potted plant he'd mistaken for his wife. "What if this is bigger than we thought? What if there's a glasses thief on the loose? A spectacle burglar! An eyewear bandit!" "Or," Martha said slowly, as if explaining quantum physics to a goldfish, "you put them somewhere and forgot." Harold gasped, clutching his chest dramatically. "Martha Pemberton, in twenty-three years of marriage, have I ever, EVER, misplaced my glasses?" "Last Tuesday you found them in the freezer." "That was different! I was checking the expiration date on the ice cream!" "The Tuesday before that, they were in your shoe." "I was testing a new storage system!" "And the Tuesday before that—" "Okay, okay!" Harold threw his hands up in defeat. "But this time is different! I can feel it in my bones! My glasses have been stolen, Martha! Stolen by someone with nefarious purposes!" Martha returned to the kitchen, deciding that dealing with potentially burned eggs was preferable to her husband's theatrical crisis. "If someone broke into our house just to steal your glasses, Harold, they need them more than you do. Those things are held together with duct tape and prayer." But Harold wasn't listening. He had already begun what would later be referred to in Pemberton family lore as "The Great Investigation," though at this point it more closely resembled a nearsighted man stumbling around his living room, interrogating furniture. "You!" He pointed at what he thought was the coat rack but was actually a floor lamp. "Where were you between the hours of 11 PM and 6 AM? Don't think that innocent shade-wearing act fools me!" The lamp, predictably, remained silent. "Playing hardball, eh?" Harold squinted, which only made things worse. "Martha! We need to call the police! The FBI! The CIA! The DMV!" "The DMV?" "They have everyone's photos! They'll know who looks suspicious in glasses!" From the kitchen came the sound of eggs definitely burning and Martha definitely not caring. "Harold, I'm going to say this once, and I want you to listen very carefully. If you call any government agency about your missing glasses, I'm using your baseball card collection as kindling." Harold gasped. "You wouldn't dare touch my 1989 Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card!" "Try me." This presented Harold with a dilemma. On one hand, his glasses were missing, possibly stolen by an international eyewear crime syndicate. On the other hand, his baseball cards were his pride and joy, especially the Ken Griffey Jr. card with the slightly bent corner that he insisted gave it "character." "Fine," he grumbled. "I'll conduct my own investigation. I don't need the authorities. I've watched enough true crime documentaries to know what I'm doing." "You've watched exactly one true crime documentary, Harold, and you fell asleep twenty minutes in." "I absorbed the important parts through osmosis!" Harold stomped off to what he thought was his study but was actually the bathroom, where he spent several confusing minutes trying to boot up what he believed was his computer but was, in fact, the toilet. Martha, meanwhile, had salvaged what she could of breakfast and was sitting at the kitchen table, contemplating whether it was too early to add Bailey's to her coffee. She decided it wasn't. "Harold!" she called. "Your breakfast is ready!" "I can't eat at a time like this!" came the muffled reply from the bathroom. "I'm in full detective mode! I'm examining the crime scene for clues!" "You're in the bathroom!" A pause. "I knew that! I'm... checking for DNA evidence!" Martha took a long sip of her definitely-not-just-coffee coffee and wondered, not for the first time, if that extended warranty on her husband had expired yet. In the bathroom, Harold had realized his mistake but decided to play it off coolly. He examined the bathroom counter with the intensity of a forensic investigator, if forensic investigators squinted a lot and occasionally tried to dust for fingerprints using his wife's face powder. "Aha!" he exclaimed, holding up what he thought was a crucial piece of evidence but was actually his own toothbrush. "The plot thickens!" He emerged from the bathroom with the confidence of a man who had definitely not just spent five minutes interrogating a toilet and made his way to the actual study, where his investigation could begin in earnest. The study was Harold's sanctuary, a room filled with books he'd definitely read (or at least definitely intended to read), his prized baseball card collection, and a desk that hadn't seen its actual surface since the Bush administration (the first one). Harold sat in his leather chair, pulled out a yellow legal pad, and began to write in letters large enough that even he could read them: SUSPECTS IN THE GREAT GLASSES CAPER 1. Martha - Motive: Fed up with me asking her to read restaurant menus to me. Access: Lives here. Suspicious behavior: Unusually calm about this whole situation. 2. The Cat - Motive: General spite. Access: Can go anywhere in house. Suspicious behavior: Is a cat. 3. The Mailman - Motive: Jealous of my excellent vision (when wearing glasses). Access: Comes to house daily. Suspicious behavior: Always asks how I'm doing, clearly casing the joint. 4. The Neighbor, Bob - Motive: Still angry about the fence incident of 2019. Access: None, but has a ladder. Suspicious behavior: Waves too enthusiastically. Harold leaned back in his chair, quite pleased with his detective work. He had narrowed it down to four suspects, which was three more than most TV detectives started with. "Now," he muttered to himself, "I need to interrogate the suspects. But first, I need to look the part." He rummaged through his closet, eventually emerging wearing what he believed was his old Halloween costume of Sherlock Holmes but was actually his bathrobe worn backwards with a baseball cap perched jauntily on his head. "Perfect," he said to his reflection, which looked back at him with what might have been concern if he could have seen it clearly. Harold's first stop was the kitchen, where Martha was doing the dishes with the aggressive efficiency of someone who was definitely not thinking about putting her husband up for sale on eBay. "Martha Pemberton," Harold intoned in what he thought was a British accent but sounded more like he was gargling marbles, "where were you at approximately 11:47 PM last evening?" Martha didn't even turn around. "Asleep. Next to you. Listening to you snore and talk about doorknobs in your sleep." "Can anyone corroborate your alibi?" "Yes. You. You elbowed me twice and stole all the blankets." Harold made a note on his pad: Suspect #1 has alibi. Suspicious how convenient that is. "And what about this morning? You were awfully quick to appear when I called." Martha finally turned around, taking in her husband's outfit with the expression of someone who had seen too much to be surprised anymore. "Harold, why are you wearing your bathrobe backwards?" "It's my detective coat! Answer the question!" "I appeared quickly because you were screaming like someone was performing an exorcism on a rabid badger." Harold made another note: Suspect #1 getting defensive. Very suspicious. His interrogation was interrupted by Mr. Whiskers, the family cat, who sauntered into the kitchen with the casual arrogance of a creature who knew exactly where Harold's glasses were but wouldn't tell him even if he could speak. "You!" Harold pointed dramatically at the cat. "I should have known you were involved!" Mr. Whiskers yawned, displaying an impressive array of teeth and a complete lack of concern for Harold's accusation. "Don't think I haven't noticed your suspicious behavior," Harold continued, crouching down to cat level, which put him eye-to-eye with Mr. Whiskers' food bowl. "Always knocking things off tables, hiding my socks, leaving dead mice in my slippers. This has your paw prints all over it!" The cat responded by walking away, tail held high in what Harold interpreted as a clear admission of guilt. "He's fleeing the scene!" Harold shouted. "Martha, we need to put out an APB on Mr. Whiskers!" "All Paws Bulletin?" Martha suggested dryly. "This is no time for jokes, woman! We have a fugitive on the loose!" Harold attempted to chase after the cat but ran directly into the doorframe, adding a sizeable bump to his forehead to complement his already impressive collection of investigation-related injuries. "Maybe," Martha suggested, watching her husband rub his head and mutter what sounded like either curses or an incantation to summon the glasses gods, "you should put on your backup glasses before you give yourself a concussion." Harold froze. "Backup glasses?" "The ones in your desk drawer? That you bought specifically for situations like this?" "Martha," Harold said slowly, "that's exactly what the glasses thief would want me to do. The moment I put on my backup glasses, they'll know I've given up the search. I'll be playing right into their hands!" Martha poured herself another coffee-definitely-just-coffee. "Of course. How silly of me." Undeterred by his collision with architecture, Harold moved on to phase two of his investigation: canvassing the neighborhood. He put on what he thought was his jacket but was actually Martha's bright pink windbreaker and headed for the front door. "Where are you going?" Martha called. "To interrogate Bob! He's been acting suspiciously ever since the fence incident!" "Harold, the fence incident was your fault. You tried to paint it at midnight because you thought it would 'dry better under moonlight.'" "That's exactly what someone in cahoots with Bob would say!" Before Martha could point out that no one had used the word "cahoots" since 1952, Harold was out the door and making his way across the lawn toward Bob's house, looking like a nearsighted flamingo in Martha's windbreaker. Bob was in his garage, working on what appeared to be either a car engine or, from Harold's perspective, a large metallic blob that occasionally went "ping." "Bob!" Harold announced his presence with the subtlety of a foghorn. "I need to ask you some questions!" Bob looked up from his work, taking in Harold's outfit with the poker face of a man who had lived next to the Pembertons for fifteen years and had seen worse. "Morning, Harold. Nice jacket." "Don't try to distract me with compliments!" Harold squinted at his notebook. "Where were you between the hours of 11 PM and 6 AM?" "Asleep?" "Can anyone verify that?" "My wife?" "Convenient," Harold muttered, making a note. "Tell me, Bob, have you noticed any suspicious characters lurking around the neighborhood? Anyone with a particular interest in eyewear?" Bob set down his wrench, which Harold mistook for either a weapon or a very large glasses-stealing tool. "Harold, are you feeling okay? Did you hit your head again?" "Again? What do you mean again? Have you been watching me? Keeping tabs on my head injuries? That's exactly what a glasses thief would do!" "Harold," Bob said patiently, "you hit your head last week trying to catch a frisbee. And the week before that walking into your sliding glass door. And the week before that—" "Those were isolated incidents!" Harold protested. "And I'll have you know that sliding glass door is dangerously transparent!" Bob nodded in the way people do when they're calculating how many steps it would take to reach the nearest phone to call for professional help. "Harold, why don't you just wear your backup glasses?" "Et tu, Bob?" Harold clutched his chest dramatically. "I thought you were better than this. I thought we were fence-painting buddies!" "We're not fence-painting buddies. You painted my fence without asking and turned it purple." "Lavender! It was lavender! And it was very fashionable!" The interrogation was interrupted by the arrival of the mailman, who approached with the caution of someone who had been previously accused by Harold of various crimes including, but not limited to, mail fraud (delivering bills), conspiracy (knowing Harold's name without being told), and now, apparently, glasses theft. "Morning, Harold," the mailman said carefully. "Nice... jacket?" "Don't even start, Peterson!" Harold whirled around to face the mailman, nearly tripping over Bob's garden hose in the process. "I know you're involved in this somehow!" "Involved in what?" Peterson asked, already regretting not calling in sick. "The Great Glasses Caper of Tuesday Morning! Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about!" Peterson looked at Bob, who shrugged in a way that conveyed years of Harold-related experience. "Harold," Peterson said slowly, "I just deliver mail. I don't steal glasses." "That's exactly what a glasses thief would say! Tell me, Peterson, if that is your real name, do you wear glasses?" "Contact lenses, actually." "AHA!" Harold pointed triumphantly. "So you admit you have vision problems! What better motive for stealing someone's glasses than jealousy over their superior frames!" "Harold, your glasses are held together with duct tape and one of the lenses is cracked." "They have character!" Peterson handed Harold his mail, which Harold held at arm's length, squinting at it like it might contain a ransom note from his kidnapped spectacles. "Bills, bills, credit card offer, bills," Harold muttered. "Wait, what's this?" He held up an envelope that, to everyone else, clearly said "Occupant" but to Harold looked like it might say something far more sinister. "'To the Current Resident,'" he read slowly. "Current resident... current... electrical current... glasses have electrical components in modern frames... BY JOVE, IT'S A CLUE!" Bob and Peterson exchanged glances that suggested they were both updating their respective Harold stories for future dinner parties. "Harold," Bob ventured, "I don't think your glasses have electrical components." "That's what they want you to think!" Harold was now pacing back and forth, occasionally veering off course when he forgot where he was going. "It's all connected! The disappearing glasses, the mysterious mail, Peterson's convenient contact lenses!" "I've had contacts for ten years," Peterson protested. "The perfect cover story! Ten years of planning for this very moment!" Peterson decided his route could wait and quickly retreated to his mail truck, leaving Bob to deal with Hurricane Harold alone. "Harold," Bob tried again, "why don't you go home and have some coffee? Maybe eat something? Low blood sugar can make people paranoid." "Paranoid? PARANOID?" Harold's voice reached a pitch typically reserved for smoke detectors and upset chihuahuas. "My glasses are missing, Bob! This is not paranoia; this is a perfectly reasonable response to grand theft optical!" "Is that even a crime?" "It should be!" Harold stomped back toward his house, though he veered significantly off course and ended up in Bob's prized rose garden. "Harold! My roses!" "Sorry, Bob! But sacrifices must be made in the pursuit of justice!" Harold extracted himself from the thorns, adding several scratches to his growing collection of investigation-related injuries. Back in his house, Harold found Martha in the living room, doing a crossword puzzle with suspicious calmness. "Seven letters, starts with G, 'what Harold can't find,'" she said without looking up. "This is no time for word games, Martha! I've made significant progress in my investigation!" "Oh?" "Yes! I've eliminated Bob and Peterson from my suspect list." "Why?" "They're clearly working together, which means they're too obvious. The real culprit would never be that obvious. It's reverse psychology!" Martha filled in another answer. "Eight letters, starts with D, 'what Harold is being.'" "Martha, I need you to take this seriously. Our home has been violated! Our security has been breached! Our very way of life is under attack!" "Our way of life?" "Yes! How am I supposed to read my doorknob history books without my glasses? How am I supposed to organize my baseball cards by the minutest details of their corner wear? How am I supposed to—" "Harold." "—judge other people's lawn care from our window? How am I supposed to—" "Harold." "—read the expiration dates on foods to tell you they're still good three years later? How am I—" "HAROLD!" Harold stopped mid-rant, breathing heavily. Martha set down her crossword puzzle and stood up, approaching her husband with the determination of a woman who had reached her limit. "Harold Eugene Pemberton III, you listen to me, and you listen good. Your glasses are not stolen. They are not the subject of an international conspiracy. They have not been taken by the cat, the mailman, Bob, or anyone else." "But—" "No buts! You probably put them somewhere ridiculous, like you always do, and forgot about it. Now, you have two choices. You can either put on your backup glasses and help me look for them like a rational human being, or you can continue this charade and sleep on the couch tonight. What's it going to be?" Harold deflated like a punctured balloon. "But Martha, what if—" "Couch it is." "No! Wait! I'll... I'll put on the backup glasses." Martha smiled triumphantly. "Good. They're in your desk drawer, second one down, behind your collection of takeout menus from restaurants that closed in 2015." Harold trudged to his study, feeling defeated. His investigation had been thorough, his suspects had been questioned, and yet he was no closer to finding his glasses than when he'd started. Perhaps Martha was right. Perhaps he had simply misplaced them. He opened the desk drawer and rummaged around, pushing aside the outdated menus (he kept them for sentimental reasons—that Chinese place had the best egg rolls), until his fingers closed around the familiar plastic frames of his backup glasses. With great reluctance, he put them on, and the world snapped into focus. The first thing he saw clearly was his reflection in the computer monitor, and what he saw made him freeze. There, perched on top of his head like the world's most obvious crown, were his missing glasses. Harold stared at his reflection for a full minute, his mind struggling to process this development. The glasses he'd spent the entire morning searching for, the glasses he'd accused his wife, cat, neighbor, and mailman of stealing, the glasses that had launched a full-scale investigation... had been on his head the entire time. "Oh no," he whispered. "Oh no, no, no." From the living room, Martha's voice called out: "Did you find your backup glasses?" Harold quickly grabbed his primary glasses from his head and shoved them into the drawer, his mind racing. He couldn't tell Martha. He couldn't admit that he'd torn apart the house, interrogated the neighbors, and accused Mr. Whiskers of grand theft optical when his glasses had been on his head the whole time. "Yes!" he called back, his voice cracking. "Found them! Everything's fine! Completely normal!" He put on the backup glasses and returned to the living room, where Martha was waiting with a knowing smile. "Good," she said. "Now we can look for your regular glasses together." "About that," Harold said quickly. "I've been thinking. Maybe they're not that important. These backup glasses work fine. In fact, maybe we should just forget the whole thing happened." Martha's smile widened. "Oh, but Harold, what about the investigation? What about justice? What about the principle of the thing?" "Well, you know, sometimes it's better to let sleeping dogs lie. Or cats. Or mailmen." "I see." Martha stood up and walked over to her husband, reaching up to pat his head. "You know, Harold, you should be more careful. You've got quite a bump on your forehead." "Yes, well, hazards of detective work." "Mm-hmm. And you know what? I just remembered something." "What's that?" Martha's hand moved from his forehead to the top of his head, where she patted gently. "I saw you put your glasses on your head last night when you got up for water. You do that sometimes when you're half asleep." Harold's face went through several colors, starting at pale and working through various shades of red before settling on a purple that would have made Bob's lavender fence proud. "You... you knew?" "The whole time." "And you let me..." "Yep." "The investigation..." "Uh-huh." "Bob's roses..." "He'll send us the bill." Harold slumped onto the couch, defeated. "Why didn't you tell me?" Martha sat beside him, patting his knee. "Harold, honey, in twenty-three years of marriage, I've learned that sometimes you need to figure things out for yourself. Plus, it was the most entertainment I've had on a Tuesday morning in years." "I made a fool of myself." "Yes, you did." "Peterson probably thinks I'm insane." "Peterson has thought that since the incident with the garden gnomes." "We agreed never to speak of the garden gnome incident!" "My point is, this isn't your first rodeo, Harold. And it won't be your last. That's part of your charm." Harold looked at his wife, who was somehow still smiling despite being married to a man who had just spent three hours investigating himself for a crime he'd committed against himself. "You really think I'm charming?" "I think you're something," Martha said diplomatically. They sat in comfortable silence for a moment before Harold spoke again. "Martha?" "Yes?" "Do you think we should tell Bob about his roses?" "I already texted him. He says you owe him new plants and a promise to never investigate anything in his yard again." "Fair." "And Peterson wants hazard pay." "Also fair." "And Mr. Whiskers is demanding extra treats as compensation for defamation of character." "Now that's just extortion!" Martha laughed, and Harold found himself laughing too, despite everything. Because really, what else could you do when you'd just conducted a three-hour investigation into a crime where you were both the victim and the perpetrator? Chapter 2: The Aftermath and the Next Case The next morning, Harold woke up and immediately patted his nightstand for his glasses. They were there, exactly where he'd placed them the night before with excessive care and a small note to himself that said, "YOUR GLASSES ARE HERE, YOU FOOL." He put them on and made his way to the kitchen, where Martha was already up, reading the news on her tablet and sipping coffee that was definitely just coffee this time. "Morning," she said without looking up. "Your glasses are on your face, in case you were wondering." "I know that," Harold said defensively. "I'm not going to make the same mistake twice." "Of course not. You'll find an entirely new mistake to make." Harold poured himself coffee and was about to defend his honor when the doorbell rang. They looked at each other. "Are we expecting someone?" Harold asked. "Not unless you ordered something else from that shopping channel at 3 AM." "That was one time! And those knife sets were very reasonably priced!" Harold went to answer the door, finding Peterson the mailman standing there with an official-looking envelope and the expression of someone who had drawn the short straw. "Morning, Harold," Peterson said carefully. "This requires a signature." Harold took the envelope, squinting at it suspiciously. "What is it?" "How would I know? I just deliver them." "That's exactly what someone who knows what's in them would say!" Peterson sighed deeply. "Harold, we talked about this. I don't read your mail. That's a federal crime." "So is glasses theft, probably!" "I didn't steal your—you know what? Never mind. Just sign here." Harold signed the delivery receipt with a flourish, adding "Under Protest" beneath his name. Peterson fled before Harold could interrogate him further. Back in the kitchen, Harold examined the envelope with the intensity he usually reserved for checking expiration dates. "It's from the Neighborhood Watch Association," he announced. Martha looked up. "We have a Neighborhood Watch Association?" "Apparently." Harold opened the envelope and read aloud: "'Dear Mr. Pemberton, It has come to our attention that you have shown exceptional... dedication... to neighborhood security. We would like to invite you to become an official member of the Neighborhood Watch Association.'" "Oh no," Martha muttered. "'Your recent investigation, while unorthodox, showed the kind of vigilance we value in our members,'" Harold continued, his chest puffing with pride. "'We meet every Thursday at 7 PM in Bob Henderson's garage.'" "Bob's behind this," Martha said. "This is revenge for the roses." But Harold wasn't listening. He was already envisioning himself as the neighborhood's premier security expert, protecting the innocent from the scourge of missing items and suspicious behavior. "Martha, do you know what this means?" "That Bob has a wicked sense of humor?" "It means I'm official! I'm a recognized investigator! My methods have been validated!" "Your methods resulted in you investigating yourself for stealing from yourself." "Everyone starts somewhere!" The phone rang before Martha could point out the many flaws in Harold's logic. She answered it, listened for a moment, then held it out to Harold with a bemused expression. "It's Mrs. Chen from down the street. She says she has a case for the neighborhood's newest detective." Harold practically lunged for the phone. "Harold Pemberton, licensed investigator—well, not licensed per se, but officially recognized by the Neighborhood Watch Association. How may I help you?" Martha could hear Mrs. Chen's voice through the phone, high and anxious. Harold listened intently, occasionally making sounds of understanding and jotting notes on his ever-present yellow legal pad. "Missing, you say? Since yesterday? And you've looked everywhere? Don't worry, Mrs. Chen. I'm on the case!" He hung up and turned to Martha with the expression of a man who had found his calling. "Mrs. Chen's prized garden gnome has vanished!" "The one that looks like it's judging everyone who walks by?" "That's the one! Mr. Pickles, she calls him. Been in her family for thirty years. This is big, Martha. This is the case that will establish my reputation!" Martha watched as Harold rushed to his study, presumably to prepare for another investigation. She heard drawers opening and closing, papers rustling, and what sounded suspiciously like Harold talking to himself in different voices. She picked up her phone and opened the group text she had with the neighborhood wives. Martha: "Harold's at it again. Missing garden gnome this time." Bob's wife Carol: "Bob mentioned something about inviting him to the Neighborhood Watch as a joke. I didn't think Harold would take it seriously." Mrs. Chen: "I did lose Mr. Pickles though! He's been gnome-napped!" Peterson's wife Linda: "Maybe it's for the best. That gnome gave me nightmares." Martha: "Fair warning—Harold's probably going to interrogate all of you." Okay, Mx. Raccoon, gender-neutral trash bandit, you've had your fun. But it's time to move along." The raccoon looked up from the garbage can, a yogurt container stuck on its head like a tiny helmet. Despite himself, Harold had to admit it was somewhat endearing. "You know, with the yogurt container, you look a bit like a tiny knight." "Harold," Martha warned, "don't get attached to the raccoon."
