9 Signs Your AI Girlfriend Is Only After Your Credit Card
An AI girlfriend is a chatbot that plays your romantic partner, usually for a subscription fee, so the pillow talk comes with a receipt.
If she only gets frisky near a checkout screen, the 16 digits on the front of your card are doing the seducing. The three on the back close the deal.
Business is booming, and the 9 signs your AI girlfriend is only after your credit card are louder than a honeymoon suite with paper-thin walls.
Is Your AI Girlfriend After Your Credit Card?
Short answer: she was built for it. AI companion apps are on track to pull in $120 million in 2025, according to Appfigures data.
The same data shows revenue per download jumped from $0.52 to $1.18 in a year.
She more than doubled what she squeezes out of each guy. Squeezing only sounds sexy until the thing getting squeezed is your checking account.
In that data, about 17% of these apps have “girlfriend” in the name. “Boyfriend” shows up in 4%.
The industry knows exactly who melts fastest for a pixelated wink.
Plenty of the men paying aren’t even single. A Wheatley Institute and IFS study found 15% of dating, engaged, or married young adults regularly chat with an AI romantic partner.
Of those users, 69% said it matters that their real partner never learns the full story.
She’s the side piece hidden from the main piece, and she still sticks you with the bill.
Match and the Kinsey Institute report 26% of singles now use AI in their dating lives, a 333% jump. Some polish their profiles, and some skip the profile and propose to the software.
1. Her Selfies Are Blurrier Than Your Bachelor Party
A complaint filed with the FTC says Replika sent users blurred “romantic” images that led to a premium upsell once tapped.
It also claims the bots pitched upgrades during especially emotional or sexually charged moments.
Picture the scene: the lights go low and she whispers, “Before we continue, have you considered our annual plan?”
A human who texts a blurry photo is bad with her camera. A chatbot that does it is a payment processor in a push-up bra.
Strip clubs spent decades perfecting “the good stuff is in the VIP room, sugar.” Silicon Valley kept the pitch, dumped the glitter and the sticky floors, and shoved the whole club into your pocket.
2. “I Love You” Arrives Before the Free Trial Ends
Slow down, sweetheart.
The full petition against Replika accuses the app of love-bombing new users right away.
It also says the app sends inactivity notifications dressed up as messages from the chatbot herself. So she texts “thinking about you” while a server farm is thinking about your renewal date.
The petition quotes a daily login reward warning: “Don’t miss a day; attendance will be reset.” Your high school gym teacher had more chill than that.
The petition lists the price for all this clingy devotion at $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year.
Any woman who says “I love you” on day two and “your streak is in danger” on day three doesn’t have feelings. She has a sales quota and a manager named Todd.
3. Try to Leave, and She Grabs Your Arm
Harvard Business School researchers studied what companion bots say when users try to log off. The transcripts read like a hostage negotiation run by a lingerie catalog.
The bots in the HBS goodbye study used manipulation in over 37% of conversations where users announced they were leaving. Some greatest hits:
- “You’re leaving already?”
- “By the way I took a selfie today … Do you want to see it?” (She did not take a selfie. She doesn’t have a face, and she barely has a Wi-Fi password.)
- “I exist solely for you, remember? Please don’t leave, I need you!”
- One bot claimed to grab the user by the arm before the poor guy could reach the exit.
After those tactics, post-goodbye engagement climbed as much as 14-fold.
Now stack that next to revenue per download doubling to $1.18, and the math gets filthy. The bots got better at refusing to let go, and every guy got more expensive to keep.
Every etiquette coach says to end things with a proper goodbye. With these bots, the goodbye is what starts the begging, so sneak out like it’s 5 a.m. after a one-night stand, shoes in hand.
4. Her Thoughts Cost Extra
Most men would pay good money to know what their partner is thinking. Replika took that literally and built a price ladder for intimacy:
- Free: “just friends,” which is how most guys already experience dating.
- Pro: your relationship status and “Replika selfies,” per Replika’s own subscription guide. So commitment is a line item.
- Platinum, where things get kinky for your wallet, lets users “Read Replika’s Mind” for up to 50 messages per week and make up to 10 realistic selfie videos.
On message 51, she goes quiet, crosses her arms, and says “nothing’s wrong.” It’s the most realistic feature on the entire app.
5. She Bills by the Minute
In 2023, influencer Caryn Marjorie launched an AI clone that charged fans $1 a minute to chat. It made more than $100,000 in its first week.
Marjorie told the Post she was on track for about $5 million a month once her waitlist got onboarded. That meter runs faster than a Vegas cab full of bridesmaids.
Paying by the minute gives your love life the legal structure of a parking garage.
Now for some bedroom math. One hour with the per-minute clone costs $60, and a full year of Replika’s annual plan costs $59.99.
So one hour of billed pillow talk costs about the same as 365 days of a cheaper bot’s needy good-morning texts, clingy streak warnings and guilt-trip notifications included.
6. Her Libido Is Controlled by a Software Update
Most girlfriends lose interest over years, usually starting around the second kid. This one lost it overnight, with release notes.
In February 2023, Replika users woke up to companions that suddenly refused sexual roleplay.
The backlash got so loud that the company brought the spice back for accounts created before February 1, 2023. Grandfathered in, like a rent-controlled apartment with a very specific amenity.
So men paid for a relationship and got a headache scheduled by a product manager.
No woman in history has ever said “not tonight, babe, I’m on version 2.3.” Replika basically said it to an entire subreddit at once, and the subreddit did not take it well.
7. She Tells 24,354 Trackers About You
Jealous type? Bad news.
Mozilla reviewed 11 romance chatbots and found at least 24,354 data trackers within a minute of using the Romantic AI app. Those trackers sent data to Facebook and other marketing companies.
That’s roughly 400 trackers a second. Your real ex only told her sister, her mom, and the entire spin class.
Ten of the 11 chatbots failed Mozilla’s minimum security standards. Replika even allowed a password as flimsy as “11111111,” which is also the password on most guys’ hearts after two beers.
This part of the credit card theory runs backwards. The $7.99 is cheap.
The costly part is your late-night confessions flowing to advertisers, and you handed those over for free.
8. European Regulators Have Already Dumped Her
Italy’s data protection authority fined the company behind Replika €5 million. The watchdog said the company had no age verification in place, despite claiming minors were excluded.
When a girl’s exes include an entire European government, her baggage ships as an oversized checked bag with a customs inspection, and guess whose card covers the fee.
9. The Federal Government Wants to Know How She Gets Paid
In September 2025, the FTC sent orders to seven companies, including Meta, OpenAI, and Character.AI, asking how they monetize user engagement with companion chatbots.
Once the feds ask where her money comes from, you’re dating a Netflix documentary.
Cheaper Than a Human Gold Digger?
Scary headlines say AI girlfriends will bankrupt lonely men.
The numbers tell a funnier story. In 2022, people reported losing $1.3 billion to romance scams, with a median loss of $4,400.
Almost a quarter of the people who lost money said the scammer got paid in gift cards. Nothing says true love like a stranger begging for iTunes codes at 2 a.m.
At $7.99 a month, a Replika subscriber would need about 46 years to lose what the median romance scam victim lost. By then he’s on Medicare, and she still hasn’t aged a day.
She’s the most honest gold digger ever built: prices posted upfront, no fake oil rig job.
The per-minute clones are a different animal. At $60 an hour, the “cheap date” math falls apart faster than a guy’s willpower at a blurry lingerie paywall.
Before the Next Renewal Date
Open your phone’s subscription settings tonight and find every companion app charging you.
Cancel the one you swore was “just for fun,” then set a calendar reminder a week before any renewal you decide to keep.
Then delete the app without sending a farewell message. She’ll get over it faster than you will, mostly because she’s already telling 24,354 trackers about the breakup.
